A new study was conducted on the content of human feces, and it revealed the alarming amount of plastic they contain. The study found that certain types of plastics are not digestible by humans so they are excreted unchanged in their feces. The study also found that each day, there is one pound of plastic for every four pounds of poo.
Every year, about 8,200 metric tons of plastic are dumped in the world’s oceans.
Some plastics, like PVC and Teflon, are resistant to decomposition by bacteria or other microorganisms. Other types, like polystyrene or styrofoam, cannot be broken down at all because they contain an additive that blocks biodegradation. These materials were never designed to be broken down in this way.
The researchers found the most common type was polypropylene (PP), which is used in shopping bags and bottle. And now researchers have found that microplastics are being ingested by babies through their mothers’ breast milk, which is passed along to them via feces.
